Chapter 2 Review

We’ve officially come to the end of Chapter 2. It was a bit of an odd chapter. I usually won’t give you two open ended assignments.

Alright. In section one, the assignment was to take three pictures of fall in your area. This one shouldn’t have been too hard. You should have focused on showing as much of fall in each picture as you could.

For section two, we had our first contest. Foods. You had to take three pictures of your favorite foods. Some of you may have taken one picture of your favorite three foods. Others may have put several of their favorite foods in each picture. Either way was fine.
The point of this assignment was to get you to focus on taking a picture of food in a studio-style environment or taking it someplace that would go well with the food. For example, if you said you liked hamburgers, maybe you would have taken a picture of a hamburger with some condiment bottles next to it.

The third section was our first open ended assignment. Collections. I’m not going to talk about what you should have done because there were no rules or guides. It was up to you. The only thing I hope you did was to use your imagination.

In the fourth section, your assignment was to take a picture representing your favorite sport. You should have tried to show us as much of the sport as possible. If you did that, then that’s awesome. If not, you’re welcome to try this or any other assignment again sometime if you’d like.

The final assignment in Chapter 2 was another open ended assignment. I’m not going to discuss it because of it’s open ended nature. Imaginations!

I hope you enjoyed Chapter 2. There’s a lot more to come in Chapter Three. Get ready for some fun adventures around your city and some new challenges for your imagination, gear and mind.

Assignment 2.5 - Yet Another Open Ended Assignment

Well, I usually don’t like to do two open ended assignments in one chapter, but this one is obvious and must be done.

You will take the topic and do what you want with it. Anything is allowed, as long as it’s on topic.

And the topic is…..
Drum roll please….
Bum, bum, bum, bum……

YOU

That’s all I’m telling you. Have fun! Questions will be answered in the Flickr thread as always.

When you’re done, upload your pictures to Flickr, tag them with “SA101.2.5you” and then add them to our group.

The deadline for this assignment is November 28, 2008.

If you have any questions, you can ask them in the Flickr Discussion Thread for this assignment which can be found here.

Have fun!

Assignment 2.4 - Your Favorite Sports

In today’s world, almost everybody watches sports. It may be football, tennis, soccer, baseball, golf…..what ever it is. Everybody who likes to watch or play sports usually has a favorite. One that they will watch or play anytime, anywhere. Mine is tennis.

For this assignment, you’ll be shooting your favorite sport.
Now, before you ask, I won’t be providing press passes so you can get into a professional game or anything. I also won’t be there to bail you out of jail should you decide to break through security.

You don’t actually have to shoot a match or a game for this assignment. You can shoot something that has to do with the sport. For example, for tennis, if I can’t get to a match to shoot it, I may take a tennis ball and a tennis racket and lay them out on a tennis court creatively and take a picture. That’s it. You just need to represent your favorite sport.

While shooting, make sure that we know as much about the sport in one picture. Don’t take a picture of a tennis ball on your desk and be done with it. Make sure we see as much of the sport as we can.

You only need to submit one picture. Your best one.
Once you’ve uploaded it to Flickr, tag it with “SA101.2.4sports” and send it to our group. That’s it. Have fun with this one.

The deadline for this assignment will be November 24, 2008.

If you have any questions, you can ask them in the Flickr Discussion Thread for this assignment which can be found here.

Have fun!
Stay tuned for the next assignment!

COLLECTIONS

That’s all I’m telling you. Have fun! Questions will be answered in the Flickr thread as always.

Assignment 2.2 - Your Favorite Foods - Contest Style

Yet another section of the You Chapter…….This time? Your favorite foods in contest style.

It’s our first official contest.

So, everybody has a favorite food, right? Well, for this assignment, you’ll show us what it is.

Your assignment is simple. Take three photos of your three favorite photos. That’s all. There are a few rules though.

First, please make sure the food you take a picture of hasn’t been used in any way.
Second, you can only take pictures of three foods. No more, no less.

When you are taking pictures of the food, you’re welcome to use a spray bottle to mist the food to make it look cold, but you may not use ay artificial coloring or materials for the shoot. You can adjust simple things in post processing, but you must disclose what you did.

After you have taken your three pictures, upload them to Flicker, tag them with “SA101.2.2food” and drop them into the group. You’re done!

The deadline for this assignment will be November 19, 2008.

SNEAK PEAK: Our next assignment will be very cool, and free style. I’ll give you the topic, and you’ll do what you want with it.

If you have any questions, you can ask them in the Flickr Discussion Thread for this assignment which can be found here.

Have fun!
Stay tuned for the next assignment!

Assignment 2.1 - Fall in Three Pictures

Assignment 2.1 - Fall in Three Pictures

Alright, so this assignment deals with something that’s going on right now. Fall.

Let’s begin before it’s over.

The assignment at hand is demonstrate fall in your city in only three pictures. The hardest part of this assignment should be getting all of fall in. Think about all of the things that happen in fall. Leaves change color, leaves fall off of the trees, it gets cold etc. Try to capture all of that in only three pictures.

After you have taken your pictures, upload only three to Flickr, tag them with “SA101.2.1fall3” and put them in our Flickr group. The goal for this assignment will be to have a small sample which shows a lot of fall from as many cities as we can. If they overlap, that’s awesome too.

There may be a contest involved in this one, so make it good!

If you have any questions, you can ask them in the Flickr Discussion Thread for this assignment which can be found here.

Have fun!
Stay tuned for the next assignment!

Welcome to Chapter 2 of Self-Assignments 101!

Hey guys! It's time for chapter two......

In this chapter, we’ll be learning a little bit about you. We’ll have our first open-ended topic, a cool contest, and some other surprises. Get ready to learn and teach us about yourself through your camera.

At the end of the chapter, there will be a chapter review so you can reflect on what you have shot, and what you have noticed while shooting. If you feel like sharing your experiences during any of your shoots at the end of the chapter, that would be awesome.

Each assignment will have a discussion thread linked to it in our Flickr group. Feel free to ask any questions you might have in the appropriate thread.

If you feel the pace is too fast or too slow, let me know. Deadlines for assignments are usually 1-2 weeks after they are originally posted.

Most importantly, have lots of fun and learn a lot.

If you have any suggestions for me, please let me know in a comment at the end of this post. Trust me, I’ll see it.

Enjoy Chapter 2!
